Bridging Research and Care Through Global FHIR Interoperability

Vulcan brings together healthcare, research, regulatory, and technology communities to solve real-world interoperability challenges.

Each of our projects is focused on developing and supporting the adoption of FHIR Implementation Guides (IGs) that make it easier to share data across organizations, countries, and systems, accelerating discovery and improving patient care. Our portfolio includes projects at different stages:

From real-world data to regulatory exchange, Vulcan projects tackle some of the most pressing challenges in global healthcare interoperability.

What is HL7 FHIR?

HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is a standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically, developed by HL7. It acts as a set of building blocks for creating APIs and messages, enabling different healthcare systems to share data regardless of how it’s stored.

Why Our Work Is So Important

Healthcare and research generate enormous amounts of data, but too often it’s locked in silos, hard to share, and slow to use.
Vulcan projects are working to change that. By building on HL7 FHIR, we:

The result: faster discoveries, smarter decisions, and better outcomes for patients worldwide.

Our Members Drive Our Projects

Vulcan projects are driven by our members and are open to the global healthcare community. From an initial idea through to adoption, each stage builds on collaboration and shared expertise:

1

Our Membership

A community of member organisations who connect and collaborate.

2

Use Case

Members propose new use cases that could improve our industry.

3

Development

Accepted use cases move into development to produce an IG.

4

Adoption

Once balloted, the IG is adopted and promoted for use.

Forged with FHIR — Together

Join our community of innovators and help shape the future of healthcare interoperability. Whether you want to propose a new idea, test an IG, or contribute your expertise, there’s a place for you in Vulcan.
